Dr. Indira Hinduja

Dr. Indira Hinduja is a pioneer in the field of Assisted Reproduction in India. The first scientifically documented IVF baby, born in 1986, was the result of her efforts, granting hope to countless infertile couples across India.
She, along with her colleague, Dr. Zaveri, delivered hope to numerous childless couples by means of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). With this success, she has rightfully made a place for herself in the Indian medical history. Dr. Hinduja’s efforts have culminated in the creation of IVF clinics all over India.
This noteworthy contribution lies in merging her basic successful surgical skills with those of experimental embryology, endocrinology and cell biology. She still recalls the day when Harsha, the first test tube baby was conceived. Three long years of hard work finally paid off, and after the long procedure was successfully completed, her joy seemed to know no bounds. A lady who has never been abroad for either her education or training, and somebody who has standardised each procedure that she uses today indeed has a reason to bask under her success.
She developed two other groundbreaking techniques: the Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT) technique (first birth in 1988) and an oocyte donation technique for menopausal women and premature ovarian failure patients (first birth in 1991).
She is a recipient of many awards, including a lifetime achievement Award in 1999 by the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society of India (FOGSI) and International woman's day Award on 8th March in 1995 and 2000 by the Mayor of Bombay.
Dr. Hinduja never felt the need to get married and have children of her own. As a doctor she experienced the thrill of childbirth when her patients delivered. As she receives immense love and affection from these children, she considers them as her own.
Dr.Indira Hinduja’s committed and single handed efforts have brought to this world many children. Her humanitarian approach with the patients, whether it is sharing their happiness or pain, enhances her contribution. Many infertile women can today have babies of their own, thanks to the efforts of Dr.Hinduja.
